Welcome to Teachers Being Teachers
Writing the first musings for this website. It is a daunting task to work out what to write about.
I guess the best thing to do is to explain why the website exists. I have been a teacher for many many years and for ages I have been hearing people talking about the fact that they would love the time and the opportunity to talk to other teachers about what they want to say. Sure, we get the opportunity to have a chat at PD days, but that’s limited and quite often its only about the PD itself Talking to colleagues in the staff room can be limiting.. Who do you talk to you when you are the only person in the dept? What about the only person teaching that subject in a country school? Who do you talk to when you just want advice on a student or whether your idea for a lesson will work? I thought it would be a good idea to create something just for teachers that will let us form that community online. I am sure that there are lots of other sites but I think that they are more specific.
Yes , many schools offer mentor or buddy teachers for a little while, but sometimes you dont want to talk to someone at your school about a problem, for fear that they might think you aren’t coping etc. Here you can ask for advice, thoughts , comments on anything to do with teaching and you can be assured that the comments that come back to you will also be from teachers. As much as I love my mum , I dont think a discussion with her about classroom discipline or my lesson plan is going to help me
Just having the opportunity to talk across curricular and across sectors is a great thing.
Teaching isn’t getting any easier. It is always evolving , extra pressures are being put on staff and we just continue to do our best to cope.
So why do we do it? That’s the million dollar question. All teachers are different and we approach the job differently. Some people think it is a calling, some think it is a living and some think it is a fill in job until something else comes along. So why do you teach?
Let’s talk about what we do, why we do it and how we can do it better. Let’s celebrate each other and let’s help each other . Teachers help their students achieve their best. Let’s help each other to achieve our best if we can.
I don’t have all the answers, but I am sure that we can listen, respect and help each other.
So what is the forum for?? If you have questions about teaching, if you have a classroom problem you want some advice about, if you feel that you have had the best lesson ever and want to share it and if you have had the worst day ever and want to share it, the forum is for you.
And who is the forum for? All of us!
Apart from questions, if you have an idea you want to share with teachers or ask teachers their advice, feel free to contact me and we will add it.
My sincere wish is that teachers will do what teachers do and that is to help people, to encourage and to give advice.
